Introduction
The world was fascinated with the mysterious vanishing of Rajasthani folk singer and nurse Bhanwari Deaccovi in 2011. Her case demonstrated the significant influence that forensic DNA fingerprinting has on Indian criminal investigations. The methodical use of this technology was crucial in determining the cause of her disappearance and apprehending those untable.
What is Forensic DNA Fingerprinting?
Through forensic DNA fingerprinting, people can be identified by their distinct genetic composition. Crucial elements consist of:

- Individual differences in repeated DNA sequences that give each person a distinct genetic profile are known as short tandem repeats, or STRs.
- Since mitochondrial DNA is more prevalent in cells than nuclear DNA, mitochondrial DNA analysis can be helpful for materials that have been damaged.
- When dealing with male suspects, Y-Chromosome Analysis can help by focusing on markers unique to men.
Forensic Breakthroughs in the Bhanwari Devi Case
Recovery of Personal Property and Skeletal Remains
Investigators found personal belongings including jewelry and a wristwatch in a canal close to Jaloda village, along with skeletal fragments, including pieces of a skull and teeth, months after Bhanwari Devi vanished. In order to piece together the circumstances leading up to her death, these things were essential.
Identification and Analysis of DNA
To verify their identification, DNA analysis was performed on the skeletal remains. The samples' deteriorated state presented difficulties for the first forensic analyses in India. In the United States, the remains were therefore forwarded to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which is well-known for its proficiency in managing deteriorated DNA evidence.
The first conclusive proof of Bhanwari Devi's death came from the FBI's analysis, which verified that the remains were hers.
