Forensic Aptitude and Caliber Test (FACT) along with FACT Plus are nationwide assessments designed to evaluate the comprehensive aptitude and proficiency of postgraduate students in Forensic Science. FACT was introduced in 2018 as a screening examination aimed at assessing the forensic science caliber of students graduating from various universities. A candidate's FACT qualification indicates their relative knowledge and attests to their minimum understanding of forensic science.
The FACT (Basic examination for postgraduate candidates) evaluates candidates in pure sciences to gauge their grasp of fundamental concepts. On the other hand, FACT Plus (an advanced level examination for postgraduate candidates who have cleared NET/GATE/GPAT/possess working experience) assesses candidates' aptitude towards forensic science-related matters.
The FACT qualification is intended to serve as a qualifying criterion for recruitment by Forensic Science Laboratories (FSLs) and other relevant agencies. The examination comprises two levels: FACT, which evaluates candidates' skill levels to analyze crime exhibits referred to FSLs and interpret results with basic training to assist in simpler cases, and FACT Plus, which tests candidates as specialized personnel capable of handling precision instruments and deriving precise results. Recruitment eligibility for FACT qualified candidates is subject to meeting the criteria established by the recruiting organization.
National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) serves as the central institution for forensic science education and training in the nation. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has entrusted NFSU, specifically its Delhi Campus (LNJN NICFS), with the administration of FACT.
The structure of FACT 2024 entails objective-type questions and will be conducted as an online examination lasting for two hours. The test comprises two sections: Section A and Section B. Section A is compulsory for all candidates, focusing on testing aptitude in Forensic Science. Section B offers a choice of five specialized forensic science subjects: Forensic Ballistics and Physical Sciences, Forensics Document Examination, Forensic Chemical Sciences (including Toxicology, Chemistry, Narcotics, and Explosives), Digital Forensics (covering Mobile Forensic, Audio-Video analysis, etc.), and Forensic Psychology. Candidates are required to attempt any one of these five specialized subjects.
The examination solely consists of multiple-choice questions with varying levels of difficulty. Each question presents four possible options (A), (B), (C), and (D), with only one correct option. There is no negative marking, and the marking scheme is detailed in the instructions provided for the online test.
