A Glimpse into the World of Forensic Science: My Autopsy Experience at Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College
Introduction:
Forensic science is a captivating field that combines scientific techniques and principles to investigate crimes and provide crucial evidence in legal proceedings. As an aspiring MSc. Forensic Science student at NFSU Delhi, I had the opportunity to visit the renowned Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College Mortuary on 30th June 2023 for a Postmortem Autopsy demonstration. This experience provided a real-life glimpse into the world of forensic medicine and deepened my understanding of the intricate process involved in determining the cause of death. In this blog, I will share my journey and the valuable insights gained during this visit.
The Pre-autopsy Lecture:
Our excursion began with the college bus transporting us from our campus to the esteemed Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the Professor of the Department of Forensic Medicine, who initiated the visit with a pre-autopsy lecture. During this engaging session, the professor explained the intricate process of how organs are sent to forensic laboratories for various tests. We learned about the meticulous packaging of exhibits and evidence, ensuring their integrity and reliability. Moreover, the professor revisited different types of injuries we had previously studied in our classes, emphasizing one particular aspect—electrocution injuries.
Focus on Electrocution Injury:
The professor's emphasis on electrocution injuries added a new dimension to our understanding of forensic science. We delved into the complexities associated with electrical injuries, comprehending the physical and physiological effects they have on the human body. Exploring cases and examples, the professor vividly illustrated the various aspects of electrocution, from entry and exit wounds to the internal damage caused by electrical current. This comprehensive overview deepened our knowledge and prepared us for the upcoming autopsy experience.
The Postmortem Autopsy:
Following the enlightening lecture, we proceeded to the autopsy room, where we had the opportunity to witness a real postmortem autopsy. As we entered the room, we were greeted by the sight of a lifeless body—a somber reminder of the importance of forensic science in unravelling the mysteries surrounding death. Under the guidance of skilled professionals, we observed the meticulous dissection of the body, examining different organs and systems. We were able to see and touch the heart, lungs, liver, spleen, brain, and various other organs, gaining a newfound appreciation for their structure and function. The experience was both surreal and captivating, as we could witness firsthand the effects of electrocution on the human body.
