Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony and Inauguration of NFSU Guwahati Campus (Transit Campus)

Guwahati, Assam:
On Thursday, May 25, 2023, the esteemed Minister of Home Affairs and Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, conducted the Bhoomi Poojan ceremony and laid the foundation stone for the 10th campus of the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) in Guwahati. This significant event took place at Srimanta Sankardev Kalkhetra, Panjabari, Guwahati, and was attended by various dignitaries, including the Chief Minister of Assam, Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma.

In a recent development, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma, the Chief Minister of Assam, highlighted the significance of Forensic Sciences in the Law and Judiciary system, particularly in cases related to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO). He drew attention to the district of Barpeta in Assam, where a considerable number of POCSO case chargesheets face hostility, resulting in criminals being released on bail due to insufficient forensic evidence. To address this issue, Dr. Sharma announced the establishment of a new campus for the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) in Guwahati, which will propel Assam forward in forensic education and investigation.

During his speech as the next Minister of Home Affairs and Cooperation, Mr. Shah emphasised the various benefits of Forensic Sciences and NFSU. He particularly highlighted the fact that students from the Northeast region will no longer need to migrate to other states to pursue their studies in Forensic Sciences. The establishment of the NFSU Guwahati Campus will encompass several branches, including Cyber Forensic, Digital Forensic, DNA Forensics, AI Forensics, and even Forensic Forensics, among others.

Commencing from the current academic session, NFSU Guwahati will initially offer five courses at its transit campus, situated within the premises of Guwahati Medical College (GMC). As the university expands, it will eventually shift to its permanent campus in Molong, Changsari, Guwahati, covering a sprawling land area of 50 acres (proposed). This move is expected to not only benefit the Northeast region but also neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Brahmadesh, and Indonesia.

Mr. Shah proudly declared that graduating from NFSU guarantees immediate employment in the field of Forensics, as the university boasts a remarkable 100% placement ratio with all graduates securing jobs. He also emphasized that among all the applied science courses, job opportunities in Forensic Science will be the highest in the future. In fact, Mr. Shah projected that within the next 10 years, NFSU graduates will find employment immediately after completing their graduation, highlighting the extensive job prospects available in Forensic Science.

Furthermore, Mr. Shah revealed the government's plan to introduce significant changes in the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), and Indian Evidence Act (IEA) during Modi Ji's administration. As part of these reforms, cases with punishments exceeding 6 years will require mandatory visits from Forensic Experts to ensure a robust and scientifically sound investigation process.

The establishment of NFSU's Guwahati Campus and the subsequent developments in forensic education and employment opportunities in the region are poised to revolutionize the field of Forensic Sciences, not only in Assam but also in neighboring countries. With the government's support and the dedicated efforts of NFSU, the future of forensic education and investigations looks promising and bright.
