Earlier, Diganta Barah, the commissioner of police in Guwahati, spoke during a news conference about the event. Barah claims that on June 19, a beheaded body of an unnamed woman was found on the Joy Durga Mandir's stairs. A case was then filed with the Jalukbari Police Station, and a comprehensive investigation was started. The victim's son, Suresh Shaw, from Tatipara in West Bengal's Hooghly, recognised the woman as his mother, Santi Shaw (64), on July 28, 2019, based on her attire and other identifying characteristics.
After visiting the Ambubachi Mela in Kamakhya, Suresh's mother vanished, prompting Suresh to look for her. A special police squad was formed to look into the event, according to Barah.
