5 Stages of Body Decay | Forensic Medicine 

1. Fresh Stage:

  • Starts immediate after death
  • Body Temperature Starts to decrease 

2. Bloating Stage:

  • Starts after 3-5 days of Death
  • Gases formation takes Place
  • Maggots begin to hatch

3. Active Decay:

  • Starts after 8-10 days of Death
  • Body materials along with liquid is released to surrounding
  • Insects starts to feeding on corpse
  • This stage ends when maggot leaves the body.

4. Advance Decay:

  • Starts after 25 to 50 days of death
  • Maggots and other insects complete the breaking down of soft tissue, skin, hair, muscles etc.
  • Bone exposed to environment

5. Dry Remain Stage:

  • Starts after 50 days of Death
  • Corpse becomes skeleton
  • This is the Last stage when all byproducts of decomposition have dried up.
